What a whirlwind of excitement, adventure, and WORK the past weeks have been out here in Wyoming.
After many hours of scrubbing and vacuuming I did get the place livable...for a construction zone!
The guys have cut, raked, baled, and stacked both irrigated circles. Daryl's cousin, Pete, has been hauling the hay out of here to a buyer in Iowa. With the irrigation up and running again to bring on the second cutting of hay they are cutting the dry land grass.
With the irrigations on again comes the checking them all the time. This morning one of them wasn't working so Daryl called the electric company to spin their magic. In short order it was working once again.
Last weekend Dirk, Maria, James, and Ian came out here. The "kids" rode quads and dirt bike across the road on the sand dunes. Grandpa and Gramma stayed behind with Ian.
Dirk and James headed home to work but Maria and Ian stayed here for the week.
One day was spent traveling to Scottsbluff NE to do 8 loads of laundry, get groceries, and get ALL the painting, lighting, etc. needed yet for the cabin. We did conquer the looong list and were EXHAUSTED by the time we made the 80 mile trek back.
That nite Daryl, Clark, and Seth textured the walls in the main living area so we could tackle the 10 gallons of paint we purchased.
And tackle we did! The "antique copper" and "antique earth" look awesome! Then the guys started on all the rough cut trim. Looks VERY nice. Such a homey feel to it. Especially after the sofa/loveseat/recliners/side tables were moved in from the storage trailer. All we need to do now is figure out what we are doing to the cement floor and Daryl needs to make cabinets and hang the shelves in the kitchen and install the ceiling fans. Thats about all for that area.
Clark and my next task is getting the drywall ready for texturing in the bathrooms, bedrooms, and the backroom. Cant wait til that is all primed and painted!!
When I need a break I jump on the quad and take it for a de-stressing ride. If its a boiling 115* out I ride out to an irrigation and get sprinkled on. The ride back is so refreshingly cool! Cant do that at home!!
On Wednesday my mom and sisters, Linda, Brenda, and Rochelle made the long drive out here to the hayfield. They seemed to really enjoy their visit to a WY hayfield. I was a wee bit concerned they would be bored with the whole "farming" thing. After all there is only hay and grass to see here. And Chimney Rock, on our neighbors property. Which is even more interesting than what we have seen of it the past years we have been here. ALL visitors will be taken up there when they come. Its a must see.
The guys seem to have thoroughly enjoyed not having to be the main cooks at the camp. They tell me often all the time it saves them that they dont have to break away from their work to cook. And with all their hard work they are accomplishing they are eating very well. I can barely keep up. One of the teenage boys cant seem to get enough food in him. I am certain he is going through one heck of a growing spurt. At this rate he will be at least 6" 6" at the end of summer! He eats a full "man sized meal" and yet is still hungry!!! Gorsh!
Daryl found a swing for babies so we hung that out on the porch. Ian LOVED it. Uncles also enjoyed sitting out there with him.
Zach and his pal aka sidekick, Courtney, spent a fun weekend here. Being in a hayfield was a first for the city girl. She loved it all but the dang moths we have been battling since our arrival.
They are now spending the day touring thru the Black Hills then heading home. Zach's favorite place and another first for the SD city girl.
Tho Zach had a fun weekend he was really looking forward to eating at his favorite WY places. Lira's @ Lingle WY and The Pizza Place @ Lusk WY but both were closed for the holiday weekend. :( Instead he got some good homecooking and we dined at High Plains Homestead @ High Plains NE which was an experience.
The reason Zach REALLY wanted to eat there is when he comes back out here in a week he will be recovering from a tonsillectomy and nachos and pizza will not be consumed by him for a few weeks.
I haven't missed my organized kitchen at home too much. Maria helped organize this one which was a great improvement. And not moving it all the time to work around is nice too. It all stays in its place. Being we have had 10 visitors in the past 10 days to feed it has worked out well. Better than I was expecting it to.
Off to go ride the trails on the quad while Daryl and Clark repair the baler and Seth is cutting dry land grass yet. I am off duty til they are all hungry once again!

Dang! You are very very busy. Glad to hear it is all coming together.
Sounds like a busy, busy summer Kath...but...is your camera broken? No pictures!
The wind hasn't stopped blowing here either and we are hot 100* or so.
Terry is really thinking about not farming next year. He thinks he has a renter.

I can't believe how much work is done out there...and how much food is made and consumed (o:
When....WHEN do you ever get to relax??
Sounds like you have been blessed with family visits.
Oh you sure are busy - but it sounds wonderful! A warm ride on your bike sounds great right about now when you would end up with frostbite if you went out riding at the moment here! I must say it is the best way to clear your head though -sometimes if I've had a particularly frustrating day Dave will send me out for a ride down the paddocks!
Hope you continue to enjoy your time & you get lots of wonderful hay harvested!
Have a great week
Renata:)
